How will I move forward?
Referencing the fall initiative for The Patterns Project I will say we are on target. What would I do differently? At this time I would say not much. At the beginning of the project there was less of an understanding of where to go with the project and then somehow there was a metamorphosis that took place that has taken us to a great place. The students and I had discussions about patterns and systems. How do patterns influence our lives? Why are patterns important? Through these discussions I believe we have all learned so much more than we previously thought we knew. Initially I think the students looked at patterns as something pretty or as an art form. I know they have come to recognize patterns are much more than originally thought.
The plan to use Google Classroom has come to fruition and it is working nicely with the project. It kind of separates the project tasks from our standard classroom tasks and this is somehow viewed by the students as interesting and fun. Quickfires and WOW's are a big hit and bring a playful pleasure to getting research and learning done. I would like to see the project continue to grow similar to how it has grown. Much to my surprise the project has a momentum of its own.
This phase of the project will be interesting because it involves research and taking our time at doing things. This is something middle school students do not do too much of. There is a middle school mindset to get things done so we can move on to the next thing. This phase requires they really spend some time researching their chosen area of patterns. What I hope to do is segment the tasks for research into broad questions that must be answered by the students. Hopefully this will guide the research and get the students unknowingly to dig deeply into their chosen area study of patterns.
My wildest hopes for the project this semester is to get everyone to completion of a Patterns Website. Recently our Network Chief visited our classroom while the students were working on a section of the project. She was impressed enough from her discussions with the students that she asked to be invited back for the final project presentations. I am proud of this class they are working hard and having fun along the way. Having the Network Chief coming back is exciting and nerve racking. My wildest hope? To have 26 fantastic projects that the students themselves are proud of.
